WHAT ARE NaMTOK's PROCESSES?

NaMTOK receives an application for RMA consent for a particular planned development.

The operational staff of NaMTOK investigates the matter, identifies the issues and considers these in the light of the history of the land in question.

These findings are then interpreted in the content of Maori culture (Tikanga Maori) including Maori environmental concepts, ancient Maori religious belief and the likely presence of buried Taonga (Human remains and artifacts) at the site.

From this a mitigated solution is identified by NaMTOK which allow the development to proceed.

These findings are proposed mitigatory measures are detailed in a report to the NaMTOK Kaumatua.

With this information the Kaumatua visit the site of the proposed development.

The Kaumatua come to a general consensus decision on the matter, its issues and mitigated solution.

A final decision is made by the Kaumatua's and the decision is conveyed to the Local Authority, thereby becoming part of the Resource Consent which is granted to the developer.
